Goals that have a deadline<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#suggestion\">Suggestions for writing successful project goals<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"goals\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The goals of a project: the premises that lead to SMART<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A crucial element in project management is the <strong>definition of objectives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>project goal<\/strong> describes the <strong>desired outcomes of a project<\/strong>, which are often tangible elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goals can be used by companies, government agencies, non-profit organizations and even by private people for personal use for <strong>project planning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A project can have <strong>a single goal<\/strong>,<strong> many parallel goals or different goals<\/strong> that must be achieved sequentially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goals must be settled<strong> at the beginning of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-life-cycle-phases-and-characteristics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project life cycle<\/a><\/strong>, ie in the<strong> planning phase<\/strong>, in order to achieve maximum benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A well-written goal is fundamental, because it can <strong>have an influence on every phase of the project life cycle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a <strong>specific goal<\/strong> is created and communicated, the <strong>project team<\/strong> has a greater chance to achieve it, because the collaborators know exactly on what they are working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every kind of effort can benefit from the goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an individual, it is possible to use a goal in order<strong> to choose exactly what and how to plan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the type of project, the models can simplify the work, <strong>from the development of the goals to the planning of the project<\/strong>.<br><a name=\"what\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"importance\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The importance of goal monitoring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Defining SMART goals is only the first step to a successful project. SMART goals: are specific<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The word &#8220;specific&#8221; means to <strong>clearly defines the goals<\/strong>, in detail, without leaving room for wrong interpretations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the so-called <strong>Five Ws<\/strong>, where the five W stand for the following questions:<br>Who? What? When? Where? Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific means, for instance, that you must be able to answer all these five questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being specific requires commitment. It means preparing and activating an <strong>in-depth research on the problem<\/strong> you want to tackle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>General statements should be absolutely avoided, like for example: &#8220;this project will improve the employment of young people&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is the need to be specific, for example, what is the unemployment rate among young people and why is the situation like this, what strategies have already been implemented, why they have not worked and why the new project should be able to solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, we recommend that you use a<strong> bullet list for the goals<\/strong>, which is easy to structure and visualize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"measurable\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. SMART goals: are measurable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The goals to be SMART must be measurable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word &#8220;measurable&#8221; refers to the measures and specifications of the performances that will <strong>determine if the goal has been achieved<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone needs to know how<strong> to evaluate the success of the project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason the goals must allow <strong>to monitor the <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-status-meetings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">progress of the project<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> evaluate the final results<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A point of reference or a <strong>standard for success<\/strong> is something which <strong>measure progresses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Measurable goals answer questions like &#8220;How much?&#8221; or &#8220;How many?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the previous example, this would mean to indicate &#8220;how many unemployed young people will be able to find a job within the end of the project&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"achievable\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. SMART goals: are achievable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The word &#8220;achievable&#8221; refers to the fact that the team has a reasonable expectation of <strong>completion with success<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every project manager should give <strong>achievable goals<\/strong> to his collaborators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they work on extremely difficult jobs, their productivity can be reduced and this could have a <strong>negative effect on motivation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If <strong>team members<\/strong> perceive that the goal is not achievable, the <strong>project goal<\/strong> may fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The feeling of never being able to achieve the project goal within the deadline can bring the project to failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"relevant\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. SMART goals: have a deadline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The last feature of a SMART goal is &#8220;having a deadline&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is necessary to include a <strong>project deadline<\/strong> or the specific period within which the <strong>goals has to be achieved.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A deadline helps to create the needed urgency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It solicits the action and helps the responsibles to focuse on the commitments they have made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes from the fact that they have a specific time frame within which to complete the task. If the team does not believe in the goal, it will not work according to it. If the stakeholders do not agree, they will not provide resources. If the stakeholders do not agree with the goal, it is necessary to work with them until <strong>a vision that everyone shares<\/strong> is reached;<\/li><li>Be short; so the goals can be read and understood;<\/li><li>Be clear; do not provide a list of options.
