Three-points estimating<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A poorly conceived <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/how-to-make-a-project-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>budget<\/strong><\/a> leads to misallocation of <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/managing-project-resources-effectively\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>resources<\/strong><\/a>, unrealistic expectations, and, eventually, failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the very nature of a project carries risks, which lead to unexpected costs and management issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SIt is therefore clear that <strong>cost estimation in project management<\/strong> is an arduous task, and yet an interesting challenge to engage in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s see what it is and some techniques to simplify it.<br><a name=\"what\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is cost estimation in project management?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-management-best-coordinate-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>project management<\/strong><\/a>, cost estimation forecasts the financial resources needed to complete a project within a given scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early estimates are often used in the first planning phase and can determine whether or not a project will move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a project has been approved, a <strong>more detailed cost estimate<\/strong> becomes essential for budgeting to allocate various resources over the <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-life-cycle-phases-and-characteristics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>lifecycle<\/strong><\/a> appropriately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A complete cost estimate should include both direct and indirect costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting a budget that minimizes costs while maximizing project quality and scope can be challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet it is important to do this exactly, and here we come to you with some techniques to employ.<br><a name=\"4techniques\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4 project cost estimation techniques<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"999\" src=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/costs-estimating-in-projects-1.png\" alt=\"costs estimating in projects\" class=\"wp-image-18167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/costs-estimating-in-projects-1.png 1280w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/costs-estimating-in-projects-1-400x312.png 400w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/costs-estimating-in-projects-1-840x656.png 840w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/costs-estimating-in-projects-1-705x550.png 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact way project managers do a cost estimate depends on different factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some businesses, for example, require that all projects be budgeted based on specific policies, while others may rely on the project manager&#8217;s experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are four of the most common cost estimating techniques in project management:<br><a name=\"analogous\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Analogous estimating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Through an <strong>analogous estimating technique<\/strong>, a project manager estimates the expected project costs based on the known costs associated with a similar project that has already been completed in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This estimating method involves a mix of historical data and expert opinions from professionals working on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As no two projects are identical, analogous estimating has some limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This technique is often used in the early stages of project planning, when a rough estimate may be enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, analogous estimating can be used when there is not enough detailed information about the current project.<br><a name=\"parametric\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Parametric estimating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The parametric estimating technique uses historical data and statistical modeling to attribute a monetary value to specific <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/estimate-resources-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>project resources<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a significantly more accurate method than the analogous estimation seen above, but it requires more early data to estimate costs accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This technique is often used in the construction and building industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One example might be: an experienced construction manager may know that, on average, the square meter of a new building costs a given amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having this average cost known, as well as the error margin and square footage of the new project, parametric estimating will help identify a relatively certain budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note, however, that in this case, the data source must be accurate; otherwise, the entire estimation would be incorrect.<br><a name=\"bottom-up\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Bottom-up estimating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In bottom-up estimating, a larger project is split into several smaller pieces of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the project manager estimates costs for each of these smaller work packages individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if a project involves work that will be divided among multiple departments within an organization, then costs might be split by department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once all costs have been estimated, they are counted and summed into a single larger cost estimate for the project as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since bottom-up estimating allows a project manager to examine each activity within a project in more detail, this technique generally provides for a very accurate estimating process.<br><a name=\"3points\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.
