{"id":15668,"date":"2024-11-02T09:31:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-02T09:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/?p=15668"},"modified":"2025-03-07T14:18:24","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T14:18:24","slug":"manage-projects-wbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/manage-projects-wbs\/","title":{"rendered":"Manage projects with WBS (Work Breakdown Structure)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>It<\/strong> is much easier than you think to <strong>manage projects with WBS<\/strong> if you use the right tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WBS (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Work_breakdown_structure\"><strong>Work Breakdown Structure<\/strong><\/a>) is a &#8220;a deliverable-oriented hierarchical decomposition of the work to be executed by the team&#8221;, at least that&#8217;s how&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Project_Management_Body_of_Knowledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PMBOK<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>defines it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"table-of-content\"><h5>CONTENT<\/h5><ul><li><a href=\"#WBS\" data-mce-href=\"#WBS\">How to create a project with the WBS<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#navigare\" data-mce-href=\"#navigare\">The use of WBS to navigate a project<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach allows you to scheme-out <strong>complex projects<\/strong> starting from a &#8220;macro&#8221; level and gradually breaking down each <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/design-phases-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project phase<\/a><\/strong> into simpler elements. Simpler elements allows a better precision in estimation, management, control and verification. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not want to enter into the good practices related to the WBS here, but we will focus on how to use it in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twproject.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twproject<\/a><\/strong>. Usually 4 or 5 levels are enough even for very complex projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These layers can represent the <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/it\/work-package-cosa-sono-e-che-rapporto-hanno-con-la-wbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Work Packages<\/strong><\/a> that make up our project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>WBS <\/strong>allows us to &#8220;collapse&#8221;, as highlighted, the project phases or work packages we are not working on, in order to focus on the phases of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>WBS <\/strong>also allows us to remove phases created by mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As before mentioned, at this stage we did not deal with dates, but with the<strong> logical decomposition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"navigare\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The use of WBS to manage and navigate projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The WBS can organize documents, costs, micro activities (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/twproject-todo-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ToDo&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong>).
