Still, it began to emerge as a distinct profession in the mid-20th century, thanks to a group of professionals from the aerospace, engineering, pharmaceutical, and telecommunications industries.<\/p>\n<p>Motivated by the need to address the planning and resource issues associated with increasingly complex projects, they met to define and standardize tools for a new profession&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Thus, in 1969, the Project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Management Institute, or PMI<\/strong><\/a>, the world authority on project management, was born.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, project management has become a specialized area of business, and projects, in general, have increasingly become the driving force behind the way work gets done.<\/p>\n<p>It is now widely recognized that a basic understanding of <strong>project management <\/strong>can provide value to people in various roles across a wide range steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Project Initiation<\/strong>: the project <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-manager-role-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>manager<\/strong> <\/a>defines what the project will achieve and accomplish, working with <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/managing-project-sponsor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>sponsors<\/strong> <\/a>and stakeholders to agree on the results.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/plan-new-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Planning<\/strong><\/a>: the project manager records all activities, assigns deadlines for each, and establishes relationships and dependencies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Execution<\/strong>: the <strong>project manager<\/strong> assembles the <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/create-project-team-7-tips-identifying-approving-supplying-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>project team<\/strong><\/a>, collects and allocates available resources and budgets for specific tasks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monitoring<\/strong>: the project manager oversees the progress of project work and updates <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-management-plan-project-compass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>project plans<\/strong> <\/a>to reflect actual performance.<\/li>\n<li><a project are accepted by the company and releases the project team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"roles\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Roles and responsibilities in project management<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Project management <\/strong>is recognized as a distinct business function within an organization, and project managers have a specific role and responsibilities in accomplishing the goals of their projects.<\/p>\n<p>The project manager <strong>will define and execute the project<\/strong>, lead the team, and decide how to approach the work based on several factors, including the type of project, the needs of the company, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/experience-project-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the experience of colleagues working on the project<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As project <strong>managers <\/strong>are responsible for delivering the projects they work on, they need a <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-manager-skills-9-1-key-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>wide range of skills<\/strong>, <\/a>including good verbal and written communication, leadership, planning skills, problem and conflict resolution, time management, and negotiation.<\/p>\n<p>But project managers are not the only players in project management: the project team and other <a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/project-stakeholders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>stakeholders<\/strong> <\/a>also play an essential part.<\/p>\n<p>The project manager indeed coordinates the project team.
