{"id":10016,"date":"2018-08-06T08:00:35","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T08:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/twproject.com\/?p=10016"},"modified":"2018-11-06T08:31:19","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T08:31:19","slug":"leadership-skills-of-the-project-manager-the-key-elements-of-the-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/leadership-skills-of-the-project-manager-the-key-elements-of-the-role\/","title":{"rendered":"Leadership skills of the Project Manager: the key elements of the role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The leadership of a project<\/strong>, in very few words, is the act of <strong>guiding a team towards the completion of a project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is obvious that it is a simplistic definition and that the true meaning of <strong>Leadership in a project<\/strong> is much more than that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"table-of-content\">\n<h5>CONTENT INDEX<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"#styles\">Different leadership styles<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"#good\">How (as project manager) do I become a GOOD project manager?<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"#pmbok\">What does the sixth edition of PmBok on leadership say?<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"#communication\">Communication is the key<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>It is about obtaining something well done through other people who, in turn, are happy to have done it.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership is a<strong> soft ability<\/strong>; part art, part science<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is obsessed with this topic, from professionals to companies.<\/p>\n<p>It represents an important \u2013 and necessary &#8211; <strong>quality for a project manager<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We have been asked the following.<\/p>\n<p>Can everyone be a Leader?<\/p>\n<p>Can leadership be learned and taught or is it an innate talent?<\/p>\n<p>This is still an open point on which there are discussions.<\/p>\n<p>But one thing is certain: <strong>successful leadership<\/strong> can be monitored and studied.<br \/>\n<a name=\"styles\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Different leadership styles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If we analyze the <strong>management style<\/strong> of everyone involved in a project, we can find different ways in which project managers try <strong>to reach goals<\/strong> and set their job.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these differences are based on the<strong> personality of the professional<\/strong> and on the <strong>style of leadership<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We tried to reproduce these differences graphically and this is how the <strong>Project Leadership Matrix<\/strong> was born, which you can see below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10018 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/immagine-1-630x473.png\" alt=\"leadership skills \" width=\"630\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/immagine-1-630x473.png 630w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/immagine-1-705x529.png 705w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/immagine-1-450x338.png 450w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/immagine-1.png 1003w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a tool that says <strong>what kind of leader you are<\/strong>, and with this knowledge it is possible to correct or change the style to become a better leader.<\/p>\n<p>This matrix divides the leadership into four main types:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reactive people leadership;<\/li>\n<li>Reactive task management;<\/li>\n<li>Proactive people leadership;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proactive task management<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It is unlikely that a project manager fits perfectly in a single quadrant.<\/p>\n<p>It is much more likely that every Project Manager is a mixture of two or more leadership styles.<\/p>\n<p>However, in general, the best project managers are those who emphasize a<strong> proactive leadership style<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to remember, though it may seem obvious, that people are not like activities.<\/p>\n<p>Managers are often more comfortable with <strong>processes and methodologies<\/strong>, rather than with human beings.<\/p>\n<p>However, the work is not done by automata and treating the team, which is made up of human beings, in an abstract and cold way means risking the disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Here is where excellent project leadership must come. As a leader, the goal is <strong>to inspire and empower the team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planning, monitoring and reporting<\/strong> are certainly fundamental for the construction of a project, but the<strong> morale of the collaborato<\/strong>rs may not be quantifiable like a milestone on a timeline.<br \/>\n<a name=\"good\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How (as project manager) do I become a GOOD project manager?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Knowing what good project leadership means leads to the inevitable question: how is it possible to apply this concept to reality in order to <strong>become a good project manager<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>The aspects that many &#8211; excellent &#8211; leaders share are the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Keep the<strong> focus on the goal;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are aware;<\/li>\n<li>They create solutions;<\/li>\n<li>They are analysts;<\/li>\n<li>They can <strong>evaluate the risks;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They can generate a sense of urgency when necessary;<\/li>\n<li>They are perspicacious;<\/li>\n<li>They promote cohesion among collaborators;<\/li>\n<li>They motivate the team;<\/li>\n<li>They reach results.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These represent ten pillars on which it is possible to <strong>build a good leadership<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership is difficult to teach through books, videos and courses.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you can learn the basics by reading, but the &#8220;practice&#8221; at work is another story.<br \/>\n<a name=\"pmbok\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does the sixth edition of PmBok on leadership say?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It can be more difficult to manage a team, and a project in general, through leadership rather than authority.<\/p>\n<p>However, leadership is usually more effective because it is built on trust and respect.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership is particularly important at the beginning of a project <strong>to define the vision<\/strong>, communicate it to the team and start this necessary relationship of trust and respect.<\/p>\n<p>This let all employees <strong>take part in the project objectives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Good leadership skills will also keep the collaborators inspired and motivated to do their best.<\/p>\n<p>In order to be a <strong>project manager with good leadership skills<\/strong>, it is important to recognize situations and select the appropriate action.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/the-sixth-edition-of-the-pmbok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> PmBok<\/a> summarizes the leadership as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead team members and stakeholders towards a common project goal;<\/li>\n<li>Doing things &#8220;through&#8221; the project team members;<\/li>\n<li>Manage with respect and trust;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communicate with, motivate and inspire the team;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Maintain the vision, strategy and communication of project performance;<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate the <strong>performance of the project team<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"communication\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Communication is the key<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Clear communication<\/strong> is the most valuable tool that a project manager has.<\/p>\n<p>Clear communication not only with the team, but also with the possible leaders and with all the stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>This quality is probably what firstly characterizes a good leader.<\/p>\n<p>Communication is not only a means through which needs and desires can be explained but, if used correctly, it clearly transmits to the team what are the <strong>expected objectives, the requirements and the limits to respect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This allows everyone to act correctly in an autonomous way.<\/p>\n<p>The more team members know, the more they can <strong>act autonomously and make the right choices.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To ensure that communication skills are clear, a simple pattern, both for written as well as spoken communications, can be followed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First of all, communication has to be compelling, as the message must arouse interest and involvement in the topic.<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, commication must be persuasive. If you are not able <strong>to influence the person with whom you are communicating<\/strong>, you will not be able to change her\/his way of thinking or her\/his habits.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, communication must be powerful. This means that we need <strong>to communicate effectively and efficiently<\/strong>.
