When we read the title, this is the first question that comes to mind.<\/p>\n<p>If we take the definition of the <strong>PMBok<\/strong>, a <strong>stakeholder<\/strong> is an individual, a group or an organization that can influence or can be influenced (or perceive itself being influenced) by a <strong>decision, activity or result of a project.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shortly, a stakeholder is a person, a group of people, or an organization that has an<strong> interest in the project<\/strong> or is influenced \u2013 directly or indirectly &#8211; by its result.<\/p>\n<div class=\"table-of-content\">\n<h5>CONTENT INDEX<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"#interest\">Interests and necessities<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"#type\">Type of Stakeholder<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"#register\">The register of Stakeholders<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"#contents\">The contents of the stakeholder register<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>This can include, for example, <strong>project team<\/strong> members, <strong>project sponsors<\/strong>, members of the organization, and people outside the organization.<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s try to analyze all the aspects that can be of interest of the <strong>subjects directly or indirectly involved in a project<\/strong> and the evaluations and actions that inevitably are in the hands of the Project Manager.<br \/>\n<a name=\"interest\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Project stakeholders: interests and necessities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In a certain manner, a<strong> stakeholder has an interest in the outcome of the project.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is therefore essential <strong>to identify all the stakeholders<\/strong> in a project, and it would be trivial to say the reasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The identification of the stakeholders<\/strong> must be done from the beginning of the <strong>planning phase<\/strong> in order to create a <strong>strategy to manage them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This will help in <strong>managing the project<\/strong> with minimal obstruction from them. The sooner the stakeholers are identified, the sooner we can start to communicate and to involve them in <strong>project decisions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, they will feel a connection to the project. They will be able to understand the benefits and they will support the <strong>project manager<\/strong> everytime he needs it.<\/p>\n<p>The project is successful, if all the stakeholders are happy and<strong> satisfied with the result.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It may happen that even if the project is complete and all the<strong> deliverables<\/strong> have been accepted by the client, the project is not successfully completed because some stakeholders are not completely satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, in order to successfully complete a project, it is very important that a project manager can <strong>keep all stakeholders satisfied<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, if the project is simple, the list of <strong>project stakeholders<\/strong> is probably small.<\/p>\n<p>However, if the project is more complex and perhaps spread across a <strong>large geographic area<\/strong>, it is possible that the number of stakeholders is huge.<\/p>\n<p>In a big project, in fact, <strong>project stakeholders<\/strong> can also be communities or the general public.<\/p>\n<p>The important thing is to keep in mind that the stakeholders are not all the same.<\/p>\n<p>Every stakeholder has <strong>different needs and expectations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, each stakeholder must be treated according to its needs and expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Not doing it can <strong>compromise the success of the project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, knowing all the stakeholders, their needs, expectations and requirements will increase the <strong>chances of success of the project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10007 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/project-stakeholders-2-630x331.jpg\" alt=\"project stakeholders\" width=\"674\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/project-stakeholders-2-630x331.jpg 630w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/project-stakeholders-2-1130x593.jpg 1130w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/project-stakeholders-2-1500x788.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/project-stakeholders-2-705x370.jpg 705w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/project-stakeholders-2-450x236.jpg 450w, https:\/\/twproject.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/project-stakeholders-2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If we forget or disregard an important stakeholder, this could lead to <strong>difficulties in the later phases of the project. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Project could suffer: delays, <strong>cost overruns<\/strong> and, in the most serious cases, the <strong>closure of the project itself<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<a name=\"type\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Type of Stakeholder<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Project stakeholders can be divided into two categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internal stakeholders;<\/li>\n<li>External stakeholders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Internal stakeholders are directly within the organization. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A sponsor;<\/li>\n<li>An internal client (if the project arose because of an internal need of the organization);<\/li>\n<li>A project team;<\/li>\n<li>A project manager;<\/li>\n<li>A portfolio manager;<\/li>\n<li>A manager of another department of the organization (for example, trade manager, administrative manager, ecc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the other hand, external stakeholders are external to the organization. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An external client (the \u201cstandard\u201d type of clients);<\/li>\n<li>An end user of the <strong>project result<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>A supplier;<\/li>\n<li>A subcontractor;<\/li>\n<li>The government;<\/li>\n<li>Local communities;<\/li>\n<li>Media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover, stakeholders can be positive and negative.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>positive stakeholder<\/strong> sees the positive side of the project and benefits from its success.<\/p>\n<p>These help the <strong>project management team to complete the project successfully.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, a <strong>negative stakeholder<\/strong> sees the negative result of the project and can be negatively influenced by the project or its outcome.<\/p>\n<p>This type of stakeholder is less inclined to help.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we will appear boring, but it is fundamental to understand the importance of <strong>identifying the project stakeholders<\/strong> in the early pahses of the project.<\/p>\n<p>It is also necessary to note down the details, requirements, expectations, power and influence on the project in the <strong>stakeholder register<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these stakeholders will have a minimal interest or just a <strong>relative influence on the project.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the project manager must also take care of them.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, you can never know when <strong>secondary stakeholders<\/strong> can become <strong>the dominant stakeholders<\/strong> and if the dominant stakeholders become less influential.<br \/>\n<a name=\"register\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The register of Stakeholders<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After having identified all the stakeholders, their information will be recorded in a so-called <strong>stakeholder register<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This register is a <strong>project management document<\/strong> that will contain all the aforementioned information.<\/p>\n<p>In this document all the people, groups and organizations that have any kind of interest or <strong>involvement in the project<\/strong> will be identified.<\/p>\n<p>Here we can find the names, titles, roles, interests, requirements, expectations, type of influence, etc. of each one of them.<\/p>\n<p>The stakeholder register will be created as soon as the <strong>project statute<\/strong> is signed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10008 aligncenter\" project with minimal effort.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once the register is created and all the stakeholders are listed, a strategy to manage them will be easily drafted.<br \/>\n<a name=\"contents\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The contents of the Stakeholder register<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Usually, the <strong>stakeholder register<\/strong> contains three types of information about each stakeholder:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Identification;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluation;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Classification.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In some cases, the register can also contain the <strong>stakeholder management strategy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the first section, we will have the following information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Name;<\/li>\n<li>Title;<\/li>\n<li>Contact information;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Role in the projec<\/strong>t \/ organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the second section about the evaluation of the stakeholders, we will have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stakeholders requirements;<\/li>\n<li>Communication necessities;<\/li>\n<li>Communication frequency;<\/li>\n<li>Expectations;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Influence on the project;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Interests and power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The last section will classify the stakeholders on the basis of various criteria.<\/p>\n<p>They can be divided according to their power and <strong>interest in the project<\/strong>, whether high, medium or low.<\/p>\n<p>It is also possible to assign other <strong>attributes to the stakeholders<\/strong>, for example, if a stakeholder is internal, external, positive, a supporter, a resistor or a <strong>neutral stakeholder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After completing the evaluation, it is possible to edit the s<strong>takeholder management strategy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This strategy will help to interact with each one of them based on individual needs, influence and interest in the project.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>stakeholder register<\/strong> must be kept up to date throughout the <strong>project life cycle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While the project goes on, it will be possible to <strong>identify new stakeholders<\/strong> or it can happen that other stakeholders should no longer be considered. The register should be therefore contain these changes.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, <strong>during the project life cycle<\/strong>, the interest or power of one or more stakeholders could change. This must also be duly noted in the register.<\/p>\n<p>As it appears clear, the <strong>identification of stakeholders<\/strong> is a continuous process.
